Match Report: The Matthew Arnold School v Bishop Wand 

After becoming league champions last week, the Year 7 boys football team was eager to secure the double and add to an already successful season.

The final was set, Bishop Wand were the opponents, the boys were ready, warm, and confident in their ability. The game kicked off with masses of spectators watching; Bishop Wand began the game in confident style passing the ball with speed and precision. Matthew Arnold struggled to get the ball on the floor and play their normal style of football in unforgiving conditions. Bishop Wand took the lead on a counter-attack with their attacker finishing well to make the score 1-0. The game stayed at 1-0 as the half time whistle was blown with Matthew Arnold clearly frustrated with their performances so far; a long way off their normal, slick performance.

As the second half kicked off, Matthew Arnold clearly increased intensity and showed a real desire to take the game to Bishop Wand. The quality of passing and transitions soon paid off with Harvey C scoring with about 14 minutes to go. The game remained close throughout, however Matthew Arnold had the better chances and performance in the second half of the game.

As the rain poured down, the final whistle blew with score tied at 1-1; penalties loomed around the corner. Matthew Arnold opted to take first which paid dividends. The quality of penalties was high, however up stepped Alfie B to produce an outstanding save putting the pressure on Bishop Wand. As Matthew Arnold scored all their penalties up to that point, they only needed one more to win the cup; Ethan O placed the ball on the spot with the hopes of all the team and converted his penalty confidently meaning Matthew Arnold won the double.

This excellent second half response capped of an outstanding season, completing the double. The Year 7’s have been a credit to the school, painting the school in the best way and they have been an absolute pleasure to manage! Well done boys!
